1) Your generous children!
Last week, a group of your children pooled their book fair money together and purchased the entire Harry Potter Series! I have always mixed and matched my book series together in my library, Harry Potter included. Now, however, I have a beautiful set of all 7 books for my students to enjoy. I am so proud of their teamwork, but also their big hearts. Thank you!
2) Opportunities to discuss your wonderful children with you.
I am so thankful to have a chance to sit down with all of you and talk about how amazing your children are. Everyone has areas of growth, and I love the time to talk though any questions or concerns that you might have, but also, getting to know you all better helps me get to know all of my students better as well. Thank you all for your flexibility and your punctuality!
3) Your generosity with your time.
Thank you to all of the parents who have filled out my survey during conferences last week! If your conference is this week, I would encourage you to come a couple minutes early to take a quick mindset survey for my grad school project. If you forget, CLICK HERE TO TAKE IT ONLINE.
Your children took this survey at the beginning of the year as a quick pretest of their mindset. My project is to compare the mindset of your children with you, so if both parents can take the survey, that would be ideal!
A note on this as well: Please do answer the questions for yourself, not your child! 😊
4) Mrs. Hoffman's hard work.
Many 5th grade families in particular were asking about music curriculum this year, and if students will be learning all of the 5th grade skills, even if they are in a 4/5. I sent an email to Mrs. Hoffman and she was kind enough to put a little summary together for my newsletter! Here is what she says:
"We have been doing 5th grade curriculum since September. I have blended the 5th grade and 4th grade curriculum somewhat. At present, we are doing a 5th grade drum unit, which covers complex rhythmic patterns. We are also doing alto recorders, and higher/lower register of the soprano recorder (both 4th and 5th grade skills). The students are studying multicultural dances and songs, of which will be performed at our winter multicultural concert in December. As I have explained to the students, the guitar/ukulele unit will begin in February."
A big thank you to Mrs. Hoffman for providing the summary for us!
I hope you all have a wonderful short break, and find space to spend some quality time with loved ones!
As always, I am here if you have any questions, comments, or concerns!
Thankfully,
Mrs. Hart

We Survived Halloween on a Wednesday! :)
Dear Parents,
Congratulations to us all for surviving a mid-week Halloween! It was touch-and-go for a little while, but as a whole the class was very well behaved yesterday and today.
A big THANK YOU to all of our parent volunteers, especially Mrs. Balsiger who planned it all! My students had several compliments for all of our volunteers at the compliment circle during our classroom meeting on Thursday. The kids had such an amazing time, and are so grateful for all of the time and effort you put into our party!
Another THANK YOU goes to our Watch DOG Mr. Hill, who was also mentioned during this compliment circle for helping several groups figure out how to make their STEM challenge projects work.
A final THANK YOU goes to Mary Wilber, and her husband, for visiting us to talk about local tribes' "First Salmon" ceremonies. Mary is a part of the Northshore Native American Education Program, and really wow-ed the kids with all of the interesting information about our local tribes!
Some other quick announcements:
Picture RETAKES are happening on MONDAY starting at 9:30. If you want your child to get retakes done, please let me know!
After much deliberation, we have finally figured out how to do Science and Social Studies rotations!
- Your child was given their "schedule" and they put it inside their planners near the front cover.
- With this rotation schedule there will be 2 days of Science and 2 days of Social Studies for ALL of our students, at their grade level.
- 4th graders will be going to Mr. Bennett for Science, and Mrs. Ratliff for Social Studies.
- 5th graders will be going to Mrs. Lambard for Science, Mrs. Singh for Science OR Social Studies, and/or myself for Social Studies.
- All classes will be intermixed with the General Education 4th and 5th graders. 5th grade will intermix with 5th EAP as well. Unfortunately, because of schedule limitations, 4th graders will not be having Science and Social Studies with any other 4th grade EAP classes.
In Math, 5th graders have completed our 2nd block on Integers, and are now starting Block 3 on Rational Numbers. I was proud of how well they did on their Block 2 test. It is going home tonight and should be brought back on Monday!
In Social Studies, we are working on a Mock Election, due on Tuesday! Students are learning about the ballot measures and our candidates for US Sentate, and writing about how they are going to vote, and why. Once students have finished a position statement of a few sentences, they get to fill out a ballot and turn it into my mailbox! The reward for informed voting is an official "I Voted" sticker sent from Olympia! I am so proud of how engaged they are with this task. They definitely have a new appreciation for how difficult and confusing some of these measures are!
In Science, we finished our STEM challenge with some excellent demonstrations and presentations. The point of doing these challenges is to give children the opportunity to be creative, but also to evaluate their knowledge and what they need to learn more about. Many of my students decided some lessons on Simple Machines like "Wheels and Axles" would be good!
In Language Arts, we have started our first "Choice Time" Tic-Tac-Toe board. Students have 9 choices, and have to work on one of those choices for the entire time. Options include, fall poems, independent reading, creating a card game or board game with directions, and more! I can't wait to see what they come up with.
On a sad note, we had to say goodbye to 2 of our students, Sara and Maryam, today. They will be moving to sunny California to be closer to family. We will miss them dearly in our classroom this year.
As always, please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
All the Best,
Mrs. Hart

Art, Science, and Harvest Parties!
Dear Parents,
A few announcements that I am really excited about! First, I heard from a very good friend and artist, that she is doing some amazing art classes with the King County Libraries! Though sometimes difficult from a fine-motor-skills perspective, I think that even if your child is not exactly 10 years old, with your help, they could find some success with some of these techniques. I am hoping that she will come to my classroom again this year and teach us as well!
I will be going to the Skyway Library program on Saturday, November 17th down in Renton if anyone else wants to join me!
This is such a great way to learn about a beautiful culture and history, and it even involves math!

In other news, a flyer just went home regarding our Harvest Party! Please contact Mandy Balsiger if you want to join in on the fun!
Thank you all for returning the permission forms for my grad school work!
We have been doing so many interesting things in class, I hope my slow newsletters haven't stopped your children from updating you.
In Reading, we have been studying the work of other students to model how to write character analysis essays about the books we are reading, and learning to think deeply about these characters through analyzing a story called "Miss Awful" by Arthur Cavanaugh.
In Social Studies/Social Emotional we have been working on learning about different perspectives, and how people can see a situation very differently. Students were making some good connections with the "discussions" during some of the football and soccer games at recess.
We also watched some really informative videos on the Growth Mindset, and have been learning about how we can change our mindset to see opportunities in our struggles, instead of being weighed down by them.
In Science, we have started a problem-solving challenge! You can see find the worksheet here, but needless to say, the room is messy, and the kids are having a great time! Some areas that students have struggled with are creating a wheel and axle, and how to make a good zip line. It is so interesting to see how each group interprets the problems and designs solutions a little differently!
In Math, 4th graders just finished up their unit on multiplying and dividing decimals, while 5th graders will be taking their assessment on Block 2: Integers next week!
I am so proud of all of the 5th graders who are running for student council, and for all of those who are running for representatives as well. I know they ALL have the potential to be amazing leaders!
As always, please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, or would like Mandy's email (I didn't want to post it on a public blog!) to volunteer to help at the party!
All the best,
Mrs. Hart

It Feels Like the First REAL Post of the Year!
Dear Families,
Wow. After only two weeks of classes, I have really lost track of time! I apologize for not keeping up with the blog posts!
There are several important things going on in class right now, but first, what came home in your child's friday folder:
1) Permission form - I sent home a permission form, requesting your permission to use videos from our classroom in my school work at the University of Washington. It is for educational purposes only, and none of the images or videos would leave the UW Classroom. No social media, no youtube, etc. Please sign and return by Monday, so that I can get started on my assignment.
2) 5th Graders Math Tests - My 5th graders are bringing home their first math test of the year. Please look it over, sign the coversheet, and send the entire test back on Monday. I reference the tests for my report card grades, so it would be very helpful to have it!
3) Scholastic Book Orders - My class code is QKKR6. No pressure to order, but if that is something that you want to do, you can do so at any time, just let me know that you submitted an order so I don't forget about it!
What we are working on in class:
1) Reading - We have been working on doing a deep analysis of characters in our books. I am modeling with our read aloud Goldfish Boy and students are practicing with a book they have chosen for themselves.
2) Writing - We are working on powerful personal narratives. I am encouraging students to write about something IMPORTANT to them. Not necessarily just the time they went to the park and skinned their knee. This has many students perplexed, because it is the first time they have been asked to think about something that could have an emotional connection, and put it down on paper. It takes a lot of courage to do that! I am hoping they will be up for the challenge.
3) Math - 4th graders have started their 2nd Unit earlier this week on Multiplying and Dividing Decimals, while 5th Graders have started their 2nd Unit on Integers and computation with negative numbers.
4) Social Emotional - Since it wasn't done in any of the 4th grade EAP classes last year, I have started with the 4th grade Second Step curriculum, but am using the 5th grade activities to help supplement. As a whole, our class has been pretty responsive to the homelink worksheets, you should have gotten 4 of them by the time your child gets home tonight! Thank you for your participation in these activities, it helps them to see such positive role models at home!
5) Inquiry - While not an actual "subject" I have started working on the skill of being curious in our class this week. It is so interesting to watch their eyes light up with wonder at so many different, but awesome things! One of their favorites was this article on bridges: Popular Mechanics Strangest Bridges
I can't wait for more inquiry based lessons and explorations soon!
Science and Social Studies schedules are in draft form and we are finalizing student lists etc. I am hoping by the end of next week we might be ready to (finally) start rotations! We will do our best to also switch these up for each different unit.
Please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions about all of the great things we have going on in our class!

Conference and Volunteer Sign-Ups!
Dear Parents,
I am putting links below to sign up for fall conferences, and for volunteering in the classroom.
Click here to sign up for a Conference
(FYI, you will be able to "suggest" or comment on a time, if 2 people request the same time, I will work with both of you to come up with an alternative, this is just so that I can keep track of everyone signing up and switching times etc.!)
Click here to sign up to Volunteer in my class!
As I said at Curriculum night, sharing your story, your job, your skill/hobby to the class counts as volunteering!
I share parts of my story all year with my students, my dog who was just diagnosed with cancer a month ago, my family who argues with me that global warming doesn't exist, my older brother that I still don't get along with very well, my hopes, my fears, all of these things make me more "real" to my students, and show them that even as an adult, I have had difficulties in my life. My life isn't perfect, and still I am here, teaching them how to become even better.
I have had parents in previous years share with my class about growing up in another country, where they didn't even have electricity, and now they are a doctor here in Seattle with a beautiful home, family, and doing a job that they love. These experiences show our children that achieving your dreams takes hard work, isn't easy, and that the "American Dream" is more of a "human dream" that we all strive for, all over the world.
I had my own father-in-law, who is a geophysicist, come and teach a class on plate tectonics.
You can come in and teach us ANYTHING that you enjoy. Geography, History, Knitting, whatever!
Think it over, and let me know what you decide!
Also, if you haven't heard about UW's Robinson Center for Young Scholars, the link is in the "Resources" section of my website, and the Fall registration for classes is coming up soon!

Curriculum Night Slideshow!
Dear Parents,
The curriculum night slideshow is now available under the resources section of my website! Please stop by if you weren't able to come tonight!
Some things I forgot to mention:
The Robinson Center at the University of Washington offers enrichment classes on weekends etc. for students in Highly Capable/Gifted programs like ours! Their fall enrollment deadlines are soon, I think! I have had many students take classes on weekends and over the summer and had a lot of fun!
Thank you all for coming and listening to me talk for so long! Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.
Regards,
Mrs. Hart

Exciting Opportunity on Sunday!
EDIT: My deepest apologies for those of you who received my AWFUL email spam of this message! It was the first and the last time I try to send emails from a home device! It never showed as sent and now I have flooded you all with an email that really isn’t worth it! I hope you can forgive me!
Dear Families,
Dear Families,
What a fun and exhausting week this week! It is hard work transitioning back to school, but after Marshmallow Challenged and some Growth Mindset Math, I’m feeling very optimistic about our class this year! I hope your children are all enjoying our class as much as I am!
I wanted to share an opportunity with you that I saw in my email, if tickets are still available!
Supreme Court Justice Sonya Sotomayor will be doing a book signing and interview on Sunday afternoon! She has young readers editions of her book, and while I don’t know the discussion topics, it is a very rare opportunity to meet a member of our federal government as influential as her! (In fact, you could argue that she is even more important than the president, because she has a lifetime appointment!)
Here is the link to the event: http://www.ubookstore.com/events?evmonth=09&evyear=2018&eventid=2018071708573900&pre=20180901&pst=20180915
If you do end up going, bring a picture to school! I will be more jealous than all of the students’ trips to Harry Potter World! ;-)
Enjoy the weekend!

Meet the Teacher Night!
Dear Families,
It was so nice to meet so many of you at Meet the Teacher Night. It always gets me excited for the new school year! I wanted to share some information with you, especially those of you who were unable to attend last week's event.
First, my apologies for the "4/5 Surprise" for all of you at Meet the Teacher! The office forgot to specify that we were going to be a split class this year. I know many of you are hesitant and/or nervous about the idea, but I will happily address your questions during curriculum night. I promise, that from my knowledge, everyone that was in my 4/5 class 2 years ago not only survived, but had a great time and thrived academically afterwards! 💛
If you didn't make it to Meet the Teacher, or forgot your copy, here is a digital copy of:
Your Child's "Welcome Letter"
As well as an "extra" supply list, which includes an assignment due on the first day (or two) of school:
Also, there are a couple links on my website to Beginning of the Year (BOTY) Surveys for both students and parents to fill out. If you or your child are unable to fill out the surveys online, please let me know and I can always print a paper version.
Student Survey
Parent Survey
They are both longer than I had originally intended, but I hope that both surveys will give me some important insights on your life at home, which will help me customize our school year together.
Please don't hesitate to send me an email, I try to respond within 1-2 Business days!
Warmest Regards,
Mrs. Hart
